Big Island of Hawaii Coffee
Hawaii
is the only state within the USA producing coffee. In 1828, Reverend
Samuel Ruggles moved trees to Captain Cook, Kona. The Island of
Hawaii has the following main coffee growing areas:
Kona: One of the most
famous coffee growing districts in the world.
Hamakua: Across the
Big Island from Kona is the Hamakua Coast. Hamakua is known for
the cleanest air and the sweetest soil on the island. Here, the
coffee trees are older, more mature. The coffee beans ripen slower,
which gives them a richer and more complex taste.
Puna: On the southeast
side of the Big Island, south of Hilo, lies the Puna district. With
fewer than 50 farms (compare to over 700 in Kona), the supply of
Puna coffee is small but delicious.
Ka`u: South of Kona,
on the southern-most point in the United States, is the district
of Ka’u. Little rain, lots of sun, and soil consisting mostly
of lava.
